Los Angeles Soup - March 8 2017

Our biggest soup to date!

We held our first dinner of 2017 on March 8. Partnering with the wonderful L.A. Kitchen who provided delicious soup, fresh baguettes from Pitchuon bakery, and delightful macarons from Munch Bakery.

Los Angeles Soup is a huge community effort and it is only made possible by our generous community partners. Thank you to everyone who came and contributed to the greatness that is Soup.

We started the night with previous winners Cardborigami who presented about research to make their structures waterproof.

Girls on The Run

Girls on the run is physical activity-based positive youth development program designed to develop and enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical competencies in a safe environment, to build skills to better navigate life experiences.

With an emphasis on prevention and positive youth develpment, Girls on the Run seeks to address community needs by not only ediucating area youth about healthy lifestyle choices through its curriculum, but also by providing the opportunity for young girls of milited resources to engage in supervised activities in safe spaces that promote physical and mental well being. Funds support the program for girls whose families cannot afford the nominal program fee. Girls on the Run of Los Angeles has been committed to ensuring the program's availability to ALL girls, regardless of family income.

American Family by Rachel Barrett

This new series of color photographs began in the wake of the election. American Family is striving to foster unity in the face of division, and represent the diversity of American families, inclusive of religion, race, county of origin and/or sexual orientation.

Los Angeles is incredibly diverse and a proud sanctuary city, with residents whose stories are vast and varied. Sharing our histories and wearing our diversity proudly is one way to protest, to make a political statement and and stand up against the administration who wants to tear us apart. In addition, while there is tremendous wealth and privilege here, there is also poverty, refugee who are trying to assimilate, many families who for many reasons simply do not have the time nor the means to hire a photographer to come create a lasting portrait. And one of the things I am excited about is to be able to gift these images to families who would otherwise not be able to afford one. The grant will go towards materials for production. I shoot on medium format film, so on average each family costs about $45 (film, processing, transportation.)

Eastside Queer Stories Festival

Eastside Queer Stories Festival is developing, documenting and producing storytellers and writers who identify as LGBTQIA+ in marginalized communities by creating a space for those stories to be produced and performed in a theater performance space.

Presented by Q Youth Foundation, Eastside Queer Stories Festival matters to the Los Angeles Community because it is a way for us to break stereotypes, build multi-sectional visibility, build community in East Los Angeles / Northeast LA and create the safe/brave spaces we desperately need in Los Angeles. ESQSF is a way for Los Angeles to experience our stories and connect with all our humanity on a totally different level. We will use the funds for the production of the 2017 ESQS Writer's Workshop plays, from locating a theatre space to hiring actors and a technical team, to props and costumes, marketing and communication materials - we are working on bringing these stories to life.

Congrats to Eastside Queer Stories for taking the giant check home! We look forward to hearing more about the festival and Q Youth Foundation's successes in the near future!
