Los Angeles Soup -November 16 2016

Our 2016 dinner was our biggest yet!

Los Angeles Soup held our biggest and best dinner to date on November 16, 2016. Partnering with Cross Campus's newest location in DTLA and super local business, we had for delicious soup from Tender Greens, fresh baguettes from Pitchuon bakery, and delightful macarons from Munch Bakery.

Los Angeles Soup is a huge community effort and it is only made possible by our generous community partners. Thank you to everyone who came and contributed to the greatness that is Soup.

We started the night with previous winners Chicas Rockeras who presented what they did with their winnings and talked more about the past girls rock camp and upcoming events.

Projects that presented:

Swipe for Hunger

Ending hunger on college campuses one swipe at a time. Every college students has insecurities, we believe food shouldn't be one of them.

Fortunately, the meals we provide are funded using meal swipes donated by other students. Unfortunately, research funds are not. This grant would allow us to conduct a survey to understand how meals impact student lives and thus, direct how to focus our funds. This would pilot at UCLA and inform national best practices.

Groceryships

Groceryships provides a comprehensive program of nutrition education and emotional support, along with scholarships for groceries to empower families to increase health and wellness by incorporating more healthful foods into their diets.

Grant will allow for one family to go through Groceryships' 5-month Program, which consists of weekly 2 hour meetings, where families learn cooking, nutrition, and shopping skills necessary to increase the amounts of whole, plant-foods they eat and receive community support to help participants overcome food addictions and emotional eating.

Cardborigami

Cardborigami hires homeless youth to assemble patented shelters that are used for disaster relief globally.

Cardborigami hires homeless youth for temporary paid internships where they learn to assemble the patented designer shelters. These shelters are then used as immediate shelter after natural disasters. This LA Soup grant will go directly to fund the paychecks of our future participants and also to buy materials required to build the shelters.

Congrats to Cardborigami for taking the giant check home! We look forward to hearing more about Cardborigami's successes in the near future!
